[It's been a few hours since Naoto arrived back home but instead of actually getting around to the 'hey I'm back' she's been busy organizing her thoughts. Meaning she's been too busy making a mess of her desk. Getting all of her thoughts put down on paper and typed out can get pretty crazy.

But once she reaches a breaking point, she relaxes back in her chair and opens up the journal to make a voice entry-]

I have returned from my mission. [Kuzunoha barks happily in the background at Naoto, waiting for a pat on the head. And so she does, giving him a small 'sh' afterwards]

It's quite fascinating to learn what kind of information the Malnosso have stored within their own library. There was so much unorganized data that had yet to be cataloged... I only wish I had been allowed to read more than what I was assigned. [She sighs. But she really can't complain all too much. The information she was assigned to read peeked her interest enough.

She has plenty to think about for a while]

In any case, is there anything I missed in my absence?

[The dog barks again and Naoto chuckles, closing the journal to go give him a bath.

A few hours after the entry goes up, Naoto finally makes her way out of the building to head to the library to grab some new books and maybe volunteer to help out around there. Afterwards, she heads to Seventh Heaven to actually play the piano for a little. It's been over two weeks since she's been able to play or listen to someone play so she feels the need to get in some practice]

Although I will never be given the opportunity to visit any of the worlds I happen to research, I do believe it will come to benefit me in some way. Besides, being able to research other worlds to the fullest extent is an opportunity I would rather not pass up.

It's certainly a way to keep busy. If any of the inhabitants of that world are currently inside the barrier, you may find some books on the matter in the town's library as well.

[They probably won't be as good as the books from the Malnosso library, but... It's better than nothing.]

Indeed. I do wonder if there are books regarding Sylvarant and Tethe'alla in our library. As I was only able to study a portion of their history, I would like to research more.

How much did you learn about those worlds?

What I was assigned to read focused on a specific race called the 'half-elves'. I am not entirely sure how large of a percent they take of both worlds histories but it seemed like quite a bit.

[Hm... Yuan could just drop this entire conversation. No one in Luceti, aside from the others from his world, knows that he's a half-elf. He isn't going out of his way to hide it, but it's just not something he's comfortable discussing, either. Four thousand years of fervent discrimination have taught him not to draw attention to that sort of thing.

On the other hand... It's Naoto. Time to add a filter to this conversation.]

A lot of half-elves are prone to living in the shadows. Their percentage is higher than anyone would estimate.

[Oh what what? A filter? That instantly grabs Naoto's attention.

He knows something about this. There's no doubt about it now. What kind of connection does he have with the half-elves? Is he one himself? Or is he maybe an elf? So many questions to ask but how to go about asking them...]

Is that so? I did read that many of them were forced to lay low. If I may ask, how would you know this?

I see. How familiar are you with the half-elves personally? Were you acquainted with them?

I was acquainted with some, yes, just as I was acquainted with humans.

[Sorry about that Yuan. She gets carried away sometimes]

Outside of this island that was created in the sky as a sort of sanctuary for them, where would they often go?

I see. [She frowns for a moment] Are there any cities within either world where they are allowed to stay?

I don't think "allowed" is the proper word for it. A half-elf can technically live anywhere as long as they don't draw attention to themself, but humans will gladly take any excuse, no matter how unjustified, to chase them out.

Are the humans able to notice when there is a half-elf in their presence? Are there distinguishing characteristics?

Some have more elven traits than others. For example, while you'll find that most half-elves have pointed ears, there are still a few that have ears indistinguishable from a human's. If they're especially lucky, they could live their whole life pretending to be human.

I suppose this is why Tethe'allans invented a device that can detect elven blood. Though, they only ever use it on criminals to determine the weight of their sentence.

How does this device work?

It takes a small sample of blood and determines the mana signature embedded inside it. Tethe'alla has great technological prowess, but it's been wasted on inventions like this one.

That does appear to be a waste of an invention if what you say about their advancement in technology is true. [Honestly, they could do so much more with their time]

Could you explain to me what 'mana' is?

Mana is the source of life. Without it, plants will not grow and living beings will not even be born. Furthermore, it's necessary to perform magic and can be used as a power source for magitechnology. They say that the Summon Spirits are a direct personification of mana.

[Ah, so it's like what oxygen to those on Earth.]

How would one be able to transform mana into a power source? Are Summon Spirits used in that process?

No, they're not. Magitechnology drains mana from its surroundings and converts it, depending on the intended use of the device.

Are there multiple uses for this device?

The one that detects elven blood? Hardly.

What other machinery uses mana as it's power source?
